The larva of the midge Dasineura tympani initiate a Gall on Field Maple leaves. Galls are 4mm-6mm diameter and turn brown once the Larva has exited via a small holenon the leaf underside.
The NBN Atlas shows only 17 previous recorded records so either rare or under recorded.

Trees
Field maple, scientifically known as Acer campestre, is the only native maple tree in the UK, known for its five-lobed leaves and ability to grow up to 20 meters tall. It is commonly found in woods, scrub, and hedgerows.
Woodland Plants
Bittersweet is a member of the nightshade family and is one of the less toxic plants in that group (although the red berries are still poisonous). This vine like plant thrives in damp, semi-shaded areas where it clambers over other woodland plants & bushes. The purple flowers appear from May to September growing into clusters of red berries.
